Veterans Day

Fighting in World War I officially ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 after Germany signed an armistice with Allied forces.

In 1919, the U.S. officially recognized Armistice Day to honor those who fought in the "Great War."

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill changing Nov. 11 to Veterans Day. In 1971, a new federal law ensuring three-day holiday weekends for federal employees moved Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October. In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed a law returning the annual observance to Nov. 11, which began in 1978.
