Trump's approval drops in deep-red Utah

President Donald Trump carried Utah in the 2024 election by 21 points. However, his approval rating in the Beehive State, while still in positive territory, has fallen sharply since November.

According to analysis by G. Elliott Morris at Strength in Numbers, Trump's net approval rating (approval minus disapproval) in Utah sits at +11.5%.

To calculate state-by-state approval ratings, Morris uses Trump's national average approval rating, currently underwater at -8%, then adjusts for his 2024 vote margin in each state. The president's national approval rating has dropped from just over 50% when he took office in January to approximately 44% now, The number of Americans who disapprove of his job performance has risen from 38.7% in January to 52%.

Trump's approval ratings dropped in April after his announcement of new tariffs, which caused financial markets to crash. Even though markets rebounded, his falling approval ratings suggest voters are still uneasy about his handling of the situation.

According to Morris's analysis, Trump's approval rating is in negative territory in all the battleground states from 2024. He's barely in positive territory in GOP strongholds like Texas, Ohio, Florida and Alaska.

The president's highest net approval rating is in Wyoming at +36.5%, followed by West Virginia (+32.5%), Idaho (27.5%) and North Dakota (+26.5%).

Polling from Civiqs confirms the trend, putting Trump's Utah approval at +14 overall, but the generational divide is stark: Utahns aged 18-34 disapprove of Trump by a 17-point margin, while older residents still back him. Black voters disapprove by 47 points and Hispanic/Latino voters by 14 points.
