Utah GOP delegation backs bill to rename Gulf of Mexico
President Donald Trump signs an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America on Feb. 9, 2025

Utah’s entire Republican delegation unanimously backed legislation Thursday that codifies President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

GOP Reps. Blake Moore, Burgess Owens, Celeste Maloy and Mike Kennedy threw their support behind H.R. 276, which narrowly passed the House of Representatives 211-206 on mostly party lines. One Republican, Nebraska Congressman Don Bacon, broke ranks with his party to side with Democrats against the measure.

All four Utah Representatives did not respond when Utah Political Watch reached out for comment.

Reps. Maloy and Kennedy also voted in favor of the measure when it was approved by the House Natural Resources Committee in March.

The legislation, introduced by Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, gives federal agencies 180 days to purge all references to "Gulf of Mexico" from official documents and maps, replacing them with the newly mandated "Gulf of America" designation.
